cheap paper shredders for home use I decided to open my cheap paper shredder since the mechanism which the starts the shredder once paper is fed had failed. The shredder has been in light home use only for about a half year or less.
When I opened the shredder I instantly noticed that the whole interior and especially the motor was covered with paper dust. This shredder must have very poor fire safety when it gets old unless cleaned frequently from inside.
After seeing the dust I decided to ditch the whole shredder instead of fixing it.

Answer by Joe You have broken the primary drive gear on the shredder. That is why, although it sounds like it’s running, it won’t take any paper. Although I’m not entirely familiar with the NoviTech shredders it’s likely there is an electronic eye in the shredder throat that has become so covered with dust that it can no longer “see”. One swipe of the finger should refresh that… however I think your shredder is toast.
Go to www.shredderoutlet.com and call the guys there. I’ve found a lot of crap shredders out there but they can help you find one of the durable ones.
EDIT: Here’s a youtube video that shows you what’s inside a shredder head. There’s a small gear on the right side that is visible at times – that’s what you broke.

I have had this for a month, and purchsed it in spite of quite a few negative reviews because I refuse to spend a fortune on a shredder when all I need it for is credit card junk mail and relatively few banking / confidential documents. It does the job perfectly well. Yes, you should only put in one folded piece of paper at a time (and yes, it has to be folded because the opening is small), but it happily chewed up 30 of these in a row when I was clearing out my desk. Since then, I have used it maybe once or twice a week. The bin is small but perfectly adequate for my needs. Very straightforward to operate. Bottom line – I have found it to be excellent for what it was made for – light home use.
PS, it’s now 3 years since I bought this, and since I’ve just done a major end of year shredding session, I thought I would come back to my review and add that it’s still going strong! Terrific little machine.
