This shredder was recommended for light use, for the odd sensitive home document. It does shred, but has major problems with overheating too quickly, which automatically shuts the machine down for at least 5 minutes.
The second, more serious problem, is that it jams quite often because there are too many strips of paper left between the teeth. Reversing for a few seconds as suggested in the manual serves to worsen the problem, because it forces these strips back into the very narrow paper slot.
Today I opened up the thing because it would neither shred nor reverse, due to junk between the blades and lumps of compressed paper between the housing of the cutting mechanism and the intake slot. It requires taking out 6 screws and lifting the lid off. Inside, there was a switching mechanism that fell out, and a power transformer connected to gears that drive the blades. The gears are lubricated with a very sticky, messy, gooey substance, so watch out. It took more than ten minutes to dislodge the accumulated debris with a thin screw driver, because the blades are behind yet another slot in a white plastic housing which I did not dare to open. No wonder the stuff just collects over time and burdens the motor, creating a vicious cycle of overheating, inefficient shredding and more jamming.
In conclusion, if your needs are limited to destroying ten sheets of paper per week, this machine may work for you. However, if you collect documents over time and then suddenly get the urge to destroy them (hahaha!), steer away from this machine. Because of the waiting times while it cools, and the jams over time, it would not be good for your productivity.

PROS:
- Shreds into consistently small pieces that are ID-secure
- Can really shred up to 8 sheets of regular paper at once
- Automatic feed on/off (can be left in standby all day)
- Can shred credit cards
- Metal staples are no problem
- Sturdy construction, heavy-duty cutters
- Nice design
- Small size fits into home office
- Manual reverse helps undo jams and clear out cutters
- Several safety shut-offs/lock-outs prevent accidental injury or burnout
- Little fingers cannot reach the cutters from the outside
- It is very safe (automatic shut-off) and easy to remove the cutter assembly
- Bin is easy to dump
CONS:
- Loud and shrill when operating
- If used non-stop for 3 solid minutes it shuts itself down for 15 minutes flat – also a “pro” in that it will not permit overheating and will force you to take a break from purging your office files. 
- No automatic shut-off for full bin (but there IS a window to see into the bin), so sometimes if you’re not watching, you can create a jam because the bin is over-full.
- If it does jam (particularly with unexpectedly tough folded papers in envelopes), it can be rather difficult extracting documents from the slot.
- Slot is just 9″ wide – many business envelopes are 9.5″ wide (however they can be shredded vertically)
This shredder will really slow down and seem to struggle with some slightly thick envelopes of folded paper (e.g., 3 folded sheets, which is actually about 11 layers in all with the envelope included!), but I was surprised that if they crept on through the slot, they were always completely shredded in the bin – no partial shredding or surface-only “scoring”, like my last shredder. If it goes through this one, it’s thoroughly shredded. These slow-downs don’t seem to have any negative effect on the mechanism. If a few seconds are allowed between each “feeding” (enough time to be sure you REALLY want to shred that next document), it will continue working indefinitely. It seems to shut down for the non-negotiable 15 minutes only if it is run literally non-stop for about three solid minutes. I had TONS of paperwork to shred on my first use of this machine and I was quickly feeding it hand-over-fist when it suddenly took its 15-minute “union break”; it would be unusual to shred like this on a daily basis.

I have had the Fellowes Intellishred PS-79Ci Shredder for one week. I have used it on several occassions for up to 15 minutes of intermittent shredding and it has worked flawlessly.
I have shredded up to 12 sheets of paper at one time (shredder works a little harder but still smoothly shreds), a couple of credit cards and approximately 15 CD/DVD disks. The operation with paper and credit cards is surprisingly quiet. You could probably shred with someone sleeping in the next room and not wake them. The noise level (dB) is probably doubled when shredding a computer disk, but it still is quieter than any other shredder I’ve worked with.
One time the shredding process stopped with paper still sticking up above the shredder. I had a pair of 8-10 bank checks, side by side, so that a total of 16-20 total checks were being shredded at one time. I thought that since the checks took only a fraction of the available space for feeding in paper that I could shred two stacks at one time. Well, the shredder stopped. I pressed the reverse button for a couple of seconds, then the forward button until all the checks were gobbled up. No further misfires since then, even doing the same thing again with checks.
Everything functions as Fellowes states. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a small bottle of oil and several clear waste bags. The bags work great. The operating manual is brief but answers some essential questions like what to do with shredding malfunctions, what not to shred, how long to shred and maintenance. While Fellowes tells you when to oil (at every waste bag exchange), Fellowes could have detailed exactly how to use their oil. Hopefully Fellowes technical support will be helpful when a question arises.
Shredded material size is as stated and is the same for paper as well as computer discs and credit cards. There are units with more finely shredded material, and there are many units that do not shred as small. A motivated thief with patience and plenty of time could reconstruct most any retail shredder’s output. That said, a thief would most likely dumpster dive for someone else’s unshredded documents before sifting through your well shredded ones. Overall, I feel reasonably comfortable with the level of security of the shredded material with this unit.
The construction and design appear to be of excellent quality with appropriate ruggedness. There is no bowing or undue flexibility of the frame when the drawer is out as has been commented on with the Fellowes Powershred PS-77Cs Shredder. The castors are resonably medium duty and can lock down to keep the unit from rolling away. The shredder without the castors sits flat and stable.
Would be nice to know about the quality of the internal parts. I have read that some machines use plastic toothed gears which have higher/earlier failure rates than metal ones. At least this shredder has a two year warranty for the entire unit, which is twice many competing machines.
Overall, the PS-79Ci shredder is an excellent unit, working exactly as advertised. The Fellowes website has a nice multimedia presentation on the operations of this unit, including the noise level. I haven’t had this unit for very long but I am extremely pleased so far with its performance and fit and finish. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light to medium duty shredder for home or home-office, especially if they want a longer warranty, low noise operation, very good build quality and plenty of whistles and bells that actually are useful and work.

This shredder does shred, but suffers from a design flaw. The clear viewing window is nice to see when its getting full, but its part of the top and not the can. This means when you take the top off to empty it the front is lower than the rest of the bucket and shredded paper spills out the front.
My first P-58Cs also failed within the first couple of months under very little use. The auto shut off feature quit working and it ran continuously. Fellowes did stand behind there product and provided me with a new one, no questions asked.
Fellowes gets an A for customer service, but an F for this particular model.

I bought the Fellowes w-11c yesterday on sale at a local store. I was trying to decide between it and another Fellowes “small business” class shredder that was on sale for $160, three times the price of the w-11c. I’ve replaced enough shredders that I figured it would probably save money in the long run to get a top-of-the-line shredder and pay out the $160 instead of replacing the shoddy ones as they break down.
I just couldn’t bring myself to spend $160 on a shredder, though. As much as logic and reason said it was the right thing to do, I couldn’t make myself do it. Instead, I bought the w-11c, in part based on the decent reviews I’ve seen on here. I don’t run a home business, I just have lots of junk mail, canceled checks, and other personal documents I’d rather not leave in the trash for thieves to steal. That junk mail and those papers have been accumulating for 6 months, going in a big “shred it when you get a new shredder box.”
Well, today was this thing’s trial by fire. I emptied the box into the shredder and I was RELENTLESS. Unopened credit card offers, old bank statements, several checkbook pads for an account I no longer have, and more. I pushed the thing to its limit. It definitely handles the advertised “11 sheet” capacity, though it does so with some protest and a very noticeable slowing of the shred speed. It gets through it, though, and it’s none the worse for wear. Today alone, I had to empty the bin 9 times… and its still running great! The construction is solid, safety features are great (the additional child safety lock on the top is really secure and impossible to override), and this thing can take whatever you throw at it, within reason.
All in all, I’m very happy I saved $110 and went with the w-11c instead of the business-class unit. If you shred perhaps 2 to 10 things per day, this is the ideal unit for you (especially if you don’t like having to open junk mail envelopes before shredding ‘em!)
